In a historic move towards sustainable and modernized public transportation, President Macky Sall of Senegal inaugurated the long-awaited electric bus fleet as part of the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network in Dakar. After four years of anticipation, residents of Dakar can now look forward to commuting in eco-friendly style.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Sunday, January 14, marking a significant leap towards a more contemporary Senegal. President Sall expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its contribution to a mass transportation revolution that not only addresses current issues but also anticipates future challenges.
The 120 electric buses, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, will play a pivotal role in transforming the public transport landscape of Dakar. What sets these buses apart is their reliance on solar energy, underlining Senegal's commitment to environmentally sustainable practices.
President Macky Sall commented on the occasion, stating, "Sunday, 14th of January will go down in our history as a day on which we took another leap towards a modern Senegal. We did it with the regional trains, now the BRT reinforces our commitment to the new era of the mass transportation revolution which solves today's problems and anticipates those of tomorrow."
The Bus Rapid Transit system is set to connect 14 communes of Dakar, spanning from north to south. The fleet of large-capacity buses, boasting approximately 150 seats each, is expected to accommodate around 300,000 passengers daily. This efficient and sustainable transportation network aims to enhance connectivity and accessibility across the city.
As the global call for environmentally conscious initiatives grows louder, Senegal's investment in solar-powered electric buses not only reflects a commitment to reducing carbon footprints but also sets an inspiring example for other nations striving for cleaner, greener urban transportation solutions.
In embracing this new era of mass transit, Dakar stands at the forefront of innovation, promising its residents a future where modernity and sustainability coexist seamlessly. The electric bus fleet represents a pivotal step towards a smarter and more environmentally responsible Senegal.
